BT Young Scientist

Dear Sir/Madam,

My name is Iarlaith Mc Ginley and I am a fifth year student in Colaiste Ailigh in Letterkenny.

I have qualified for the 2018 BT Young Scientist Exhibition with my road safety project on drink driving. The project has been kindly supported by the Donegal Education Training Board, the Donegal County Council Road Safety Group, The Donegal Association, Dublin  and Fintan Moloney & Company, Letterkenny

I would really appreciate your help in completing the project. It will involve using a driving a simulator with and without the consumption of four units of alcohol (vodka + mixer, one vodka = 1.4 units).

My aim is to scientifically demonstrate the effect that four units of alcohol has on your driving.

The driving simulator (supplied by Simulated Sports, Dublin) will be in Colaiste Ailigh, Knocknamona, Letterkenny, between Thursday 4th and Sunday 7th of January 2018.

The full experiment will take approximately 60 minutes. All participants will be issued with written instructions following registration. The simulators computing software with issue and analyze the results and everything will be totally confidential. Drivers will not have an audience whilst using the simulator.

Methodology.

I need half of the participants to drive firstly without having consumed alcohol and the other half to drive firstly with alcohol consumed.

  • Drivers driving firstly without alcohol will be able to complete the experiment within the same day by booking a second slot if they chose to do so.
  • Those who drive the simulator firstly with alcohol will need to book a second slot on another day.

Driving  without alcohol.

Participants are asked to arrive at the school shortly before the beginning of their allotted hour. This part can be completed in approximately 10min within the allotted 60 minute slot.

  1. Participants will be given verbal instructions on how to use the driving simulator and a practice run.                                                                                                                                 3 mins.
  2. Participants will the use the simulator and follow simulated urban course.                    5 mins.

A dhuine uasail,

Is mise Iarlaith Mac Fhionnghaile agus is dalta cúigiú bliana mé i gColáiste Ailigh i Leitir Ceanainn.

Cháiligh mé don Taispeántas BT Eolaí Óg 2018 le mo thionscadal ar thiomáint faoi thionchar dí. Thug Bord Oideachais agus Oiliúna Dhún na nGall, Grúpa um Shábháilteacht ar Bhóithre, Comhairle Chontae, Dhún nan Gall, Cuman Dún nan Gall, BAC agus Fintan Moloney & Comhlacht urraíocht dom.

Bheinn fíorbhuíoch díot as do chuidiú chun an tionscadal seo a chur i gcrích. Beidh tiomáint ionsamhlóra i gceist le agus gan ceithre aonad alcóil a ól (vodka agus meascthóir, 1x vodka = 1.4 aonad).

Is í an aidhm atá agam ná léiriú go heolaíoch an tionchar a bhíonn ag ceithre aonad alcóil ar thiomáint duine.

Beidh an ionsamhlóir (curtha ar fáil ag Simulated Sports, Baile Átha Cliath) i gColáiste Ailigh, Cnoc na Móna, Leitir Ceanainn idir Déardaoin 4ú Eanáir agus Dé Domhnaigh 7ú Eanáir 2018.

Glacfaidh an turgnamh iomlán 60 nóiméad nó mar sin. Gheobhaidh na rannpháirtithe go léir treoracha i scríbhinn tar éis dóibh clárú. Déanfaidh bogearraí ríomhaireachta an ionsamhlóra anailís ar na torthaí go léir agus beidh gach rud faoi rún. Ní bheidh lucht féachána ag na tiománaithe agus iad ag úsáid an ionsamhlóra.

Modheolaíocht

Ag tiomáint gan alcól

Iarrtar ar na rannpháirtithe a bheith sa scoil go gairid roimh an uair a chloig atá roghnaithe dóibh. Is féidir an chuid seo a bheith comhlánaithe i 10 nóiméad laistigh den sliotán ama d’uair a chloig.

1. Tabharfar treoracha briathartha ar úsáid an ionsamhlóra agus rith cleachtaidh.                                  3 nóiméad

2. Úsáidfidh na rannpháirtithe an ionsamhlóir agus leanfaidh siad an cúrsa uirbeach ionsamhlaithe.  5 nóiméad

Ag tiomáint le halcól

Iarrtar ar na rannpháirtithe a bheith sa scoil go gairid roimh an uair a chloig atá roghnaithe dóibh. Is féidir an chuid seo a bheith comhlánaithe i 40 nóiméad den sliotán ama d’uair a chloig.

1. Tabharfar treoracha briathartha ar úsáid an ionsamhlóra agus rith cleachtaidh.                                  3 nóiméad

2. Ólfaidh na rannpháirtithe dhá aonad vodka agus meascthóir a chuirfear ar fáil.                             30 nóiméad

3. Úsáidfidh na rannpháirtithe an ionsamhlóir agus leanfaidh siad an cúrsa uirbeach ionsamhlaithe.  5 nóiméad

Más gá is féidir le tiománaithe ainmnithe a bheith ar fáil sa scoil le rannpháirtithe a ólann an t-alcól don turgnamh a thiomáint abhaile.

Chruthaigh mé córas áirithinte ar líne le sliotáin aon uaire. Cuir an uair is oiriúnaigh duit in áirithe, tar agus bain sult as an turgnamh.
